Word games are my passion (well, one of my passions. I have so many, I can't keep them straight. But I digress). Many nights find me multi-tasking as I watch TV and play Scrabble on my iPad (my life is hard work sometimes, let me tell you). I must admit, however, that my generation's favorite game always kept me puzzled. I could manage to get one colored side on a Rubik's Cube but that was about it. The competitive side of me still hates that. Grr. Arrg. So you can imagine the gleam in my eye when I heard about the Scruble Cube. Yep, it's pretty much Scrabble in a Rubik's Cube, without having to connect like a crossword puzzle. A word game in a cube? That I could master. Oh, yeah.
Isn't it pretty? Doesn't it make you want to grab it and start turning, finding all the word combinations possible? Yeah, us too. Unfortunately our first cube was a bit fragile and a letter was broken right out of the box. Disappointment ensued, soon to be replaced with smiles as the company quickly sent us a replacement. This time, we removed it gently from the box and read the instructions before turning the cube this way and that. The age is listed as 8+ and it's probably a good guideline, as this isn't going to take being tossed around the room too often.
However, if you read the directions (cleverly hidden at the back of the box) and turn the cube as directed, you'll soon find yourself enjoying a lively game of word find. The object of the game is to form words and there are two options given for game play. The game includes a sand timer and score pad and can be played with one to four players. There's also an option for lovers of puzzles (ie: not me) to return the cube to its original configuration, spelling out Scruble Cube across two sides.
Of course, there are many ways you could use this cube (simply finding words is a great challenge) and many ways to integrate it into your homeschool. The company even offers lesson plans to help with this. At it's core, it is an educational game but one that's fun enough to play during "free time" and get in a little spelling practice without anyone realizing it. And if you have any Scrabble or puzzle fans in your circle of friends or family, this would make a great Christmas gift!
Scruble Cube retails for $24.95. All in all, I'm a fan. I'm removing a coffee cup due the fragility of the product but otherwise, it's a hit!
