This is my first year as a Municipal Liaison (this just means I put together the local events) and I'm busy planning a Kick-Off party and trying to get people excited on the regional forum and reading all the great ideas for events. I'm blaming my current obsession on first year prep. Yeah, 'cause I would never be like that on my own. I'm not at all the obsessive type...
Snort.
It's my fifth year participating in NaNoWriMo and the first year I have actually started story prep. Gasp! I know, what am I thinking? Actually, I'm wondering how it will work for me. Last year's dystopia was a nightmare, and not in a good way. I still love the story idea and will hopefully return to it someday, but it was impossible to write by the seat of my pants. I may have completed the 50,000 words for NaNo but the draft was an epic flop.
So this year I tried to outline. Outlining was failing big time. The story was not fleshed out enough for the outlining process. Then I received an email about reviewing the book, The Story Template. I emailed back immediately, had a nice chat with the author, and have been working through it this past week. This isn't even my review, I haven't finished it yet, but it's been awesome so far.
A friend from my local NaNo group emailed me an idea for the Kick-Off. She had attended an online workshop for Sketch a Novel in an Hour. It was very similar in feel to The Story Template, in that it took you through a series of questions designed to help you flesh out your story, but was much simpler at only 10 questions. I'd already been thinking it'd be cool to work through something like The Story Template as a group next September/October (a remnant continues to meet in the off months), so this seemed like a great fit to get our feet wet! Our Kick Off is Wednesday so we'll see how it goes.
While I was surfing the forums today, I came across a thread for those who participate in the Write on Edge forum and are also involved in NaNo. After popping in to say hi it hit me, these prompts would be perfect to use as a NaNo muse! I admitted my *headdesk* moment and am hoping to integrate the weekly prompts with my NaNo and post them here. Ha! We will see how that goes too!
