The 6th Annual Homeschool Blog Awards are open for nominations over at The Homeschool Post. This is the second year I've heard the buzz, as bloggers secretly (or not so secretly) hope to be nominated. More blog traffic is appealing. Knowing someone actually likes your blog is encouraging. And who doesn't like awards? But as a few of us were chatting about the process, we realized that we didn't really fit well into any of the categories (with the possible exception of Nitty-Gritty) and began tossing around our own silly ideas for awards we could actually win. And so is born The Homeschool Misfit Awards! These awards are not meant to take away from The Homeschool Blog Awards in any way (Did I not just admit we're all wannabes?) but are merely designed for fun and amusement.
And here's the paragraph from this year's nomination post:
Welcome to the 2011 Homeschool Misfit Awards! Have you ever read any of the (mostly wonderful) homeschool blog award categories and thought, "Wow, these are cool but I'd never fit into any of these! Where's the award for the one who tries hard but knows she'll never be a super blogger"? That's where the Misfit Awards come in to play! These are meant to be fun, self deprecating, and humorous. Hopefully knowing we're not alone will encourage us all to keep reaching for our dreams, despite our failures. Misfit Powers, Activate! (Yes, I just showed my age. But if you made a fist and thrust out your arm, so did you!)
Being nominated as a "Misfit" is not an insult. It's not insinuating that you are not "the real thing" (in fact, quite the opposite) and it's certainly not meant to be rude or discouraging (again, quite the opposite)! I have received many, many comments and emails from people who love the (obviously exaggerated) humor and appreciate being able to connect with other "Misfits", but I've also received a couple from those who do not wish to be associated. That's okay too. If you don't "get" the Misfit Awards, you're not a Misfit. And that's perfectly fine.
As I stated in the voting post, we're all homeschooling because we want the best for our kids. If we don't get each other's humor or we blog/homeschool/live differently, we are still connected by that one aspect. Let's support each other in that, if nothing else.
