Wise Alec: Civilize This! Trivia Game

If you've been around for long, you know that I love games and gaming. There is so much to be learned through gaming, whether it's marketed as an educational game or not.  In fact, many times the educational games focus so much on trying to teach that they forget to make the game enjoyable. Learning is best when it's natural and I want a game that my kids will play simply because they enjoy it and not because I have to assign it as "school".

Thankfully, Griddly Games realizes that even the granddaddy of educational games, the trivia challenge, should have that added element that kicks it up a notch.  That little extra something that takes it from a stack of questions to a game that's fun! My 11 and 12 year old daughters and I played Wise Alec: Civilize This! in the middle of our summer break and loved every minute of it. This is an expansion pack and travel game. It can be used as an addition to the Wise Alec Family Trivia Game, but it played just fine on its own.

Civilize This! contains trivia cards for ancient, medieval, and modern time periods.  There are 3 point and 7 point questions on the card and the player may choose their point value question (Usually. But we'll get to that in a minute).  The questions range from fairly common knowledge to I-can't-remember-if-I-ever-learned-that-in-the-first-place-and-I-couldn't-even-hazard-a-guess.  My girls were not discouraged by this after I pointed out that more we played, the more they'd memorize the cards and then be able to wipe the floor with their brothers. They were quite excited about this prospect (and I was quite excited that they'd be memorizing the history facts!).

So what makes this game different from every other trivia card game on the market? The die and the Wise Alec cards. The die has different colors on each side. You roll the die at the beginning of your turn and that determines which time period card deck you draw from. If you roll a blue, you get to choose whichever deck you want.  If it's orange, your opponent chooses for you. And if you roll a purple, you pick up a Wise Alec card.

The Wise Alec card is what made my 12 year old call this game "awesome". These cards may ask you a Brain Teaser question (Name 5 countries in Europe) or it may simply give you extra points or remove some of your points (Oops! You gave your friend in China a clock for his birthday. -2 points.). My kids favorite cards are the ones that require some action on their part (Do your best "Egyptian" dance. +5 points). These cards kept the game exciting!

About halfway through our first game something interesting happened. My 16 year old son had been sitting on the couch reading as we played. Suddenly he came over and challenged us all, citing his theory that he could join in halfway through and still beat us.  We took that challenge. He lost that challenge.  But it still goes to show that this is a lot more fun than your typical trivia game!

Civilize This! is available online and at various local retailers. Click HERE to see the possibilities.  Don't forget to check out the main game, as well as their other expansions, and let me know if you enjoy it as much as we do!
