Time4Learning Revisited

Photobucket

We reviewed Time4Learning before, a couple of years ago, and liked it. When it came up for review again, we were excited to try it once more but not so excited that the majority of the review period would be during our very busy summer vacation. I was concerned about talking one of my children into "doing school" before our year had officially begun and was surprised when my 11 year old daughter happily volunteered.

She fondly remembered the time we used Time4Learning for math and language arts and was more than willing to jump in and see if she still loved it. She did, and wished she had been able to fit in more time than our schedule allowed. In fact, I now have an 11 year old asking me to continue with it for this year (but unfortunately for her, we are going a different direction for now).

The basic premise of the program hasn't changed, so I will share a portion from my previous review and then add a few thoughts from this time around.

Time4Learning.com is an online program providing complete language arts and math for pre-K through 8th grade. Science and Social Studies are added as a free bonus for many of the grades. Lessons are presented as fun, interactive educational games with lots of color and humor. These are based on public school curriculum through their software partner, Compass Learning.

Computers are a way of life today and I love that there are companies providing interactive, online programs for homeschoolers. My children love to be on the computer, whether its Webkinz or Runescape, and school becomes much more appealing to them in the form of online lessons that utilize games and humor. There are some homeschoolers who feel school should not be fun- this is not the program for them. If you're one, like me, who desires that your children love learning and you don't mind a little wacky humor now and then, then this may be a product you enjoy!

I have shared in previous reviews that we are mostly a right-brained, hands-on kind of family. We love curriculum that is bright, colorful, story based, humorous, and interactive. Many online programs are just a tad too serious for us but Time4Learning has been a perfect fit. I have caught my children logging on during non-school times, just for fun. Their retention of what they have learned has been great, for the most part. And my daughter who struggles with reading has improved her skills through the Language Arts activities...(to read the rest of the review, please click HERE.)

The review continued with a few cons, mostly directed toward the humanistic mindset of the curriculum and the sometimes over the top humor. Once again, I loved this program with the exception of these two issues. I love quirky, wacky, sometimes stupid humor but I'm not fond of it when it's at the expense of others, which sometimes occurs here, especially in the older grades. The assumption that kids and parents don't get along also bothers me and the very "schoolish" feel of the program (referencing grades, teachers, report cards, etc.) can sometimes get under my skin as a relaxed homeschooler. However, I still like the program more than I don't and I would use it with my kids for a subject or two without worrying too much (we talk about all this kind of stuff when it occurs and that works for me).

My kids really like it and they learn the material. If I could afford it as a supplement alone, I would order three or four subscriptions on the spot. I guess that means that despite the same concerns I had previously, I'm a fan. Time4Learning, we still love you.

Time4Learning is a monthly subscription. The membership fee is $19.95 for the first child and $14.95 for each additional child. They offer a 14 day money back guarantee, so if you try it and don't like it, it's risk free. I'm always a fan of that!
