Passion vs. Parenting (A Red Writing Hood Prompt)

Prompt: Let's get all steamy up in here and write about s*x. But you know us. There's a twist. You can't write about the act. I don't want to read about any heaving bosoms or girded manhood.

Well, this was a challenge! First of all, I had promised myself that I would complete the prompt this week no matter what it was, haha! Let's write a story about s*x (I add the * only for spam filters, not because I have an issue with the word. Far from it.) on a homeschool blog without offending anyone. Yep, challenge!

And then I didn't even read the prompt until today. So I just sat my rear down at Barnes & Noble and banged this out in about thirty minutes (and I think I may be over word count but I don't want to hand count so it is what it is). But because I promised myself I would do this (and I can't let myself down), I am going to post the raw words. That's me, Ms. NeverHasTimeToEdit. Someday, that shall change. Today is not that day.

Here goes nothin'.

The sauce was simmering nicely in the pot. She dipped her pinky finger in and tasted, the marinara hot and tangy on her tongue. A door opened and closed in the other room and he walked into the kitchen, idly flipping through the stack of mail in his hands. She smiled and asked him how his day had been. He mumbled something unintelligible in response, his focus on a flier advertising great deals on laptop computers. She sighed, dipped her pinky into the sauce once again, and moved closer. "Taste."

His eyebrows rose as he obeyed, that special grin forming behind his eyes; the one reserved just for her. Tossing the mail onto the table, he pulled her close and kissed her, one hand on the back of her head, the other-

"Daddy's home!" The excited shouts were followed by three young children launching themselves at their father and the couple jumped apart quickly. Mom went back to stirring the sauce while Dad stooped down to hug all three at the same time. He looked up at her over the kids' heads and winked. She blushed.

Dinner was served, cleaned up, and kids tucked into bed. There was no time for anything but responsibilities, the unspoken needs kindling slowly inside, spoken only in the occasional glance, the occasional smile that spoke of more than dirty dishes and packaging leftovers. As soon as the family was settled for the night, they both moved quickly toward the bedroom, toward privacy, toward each other.

They fell together, laughingly, on the unmade bed.

"Never had the chance to make it.", she said apologetically.

"Saves us time in unmaking it." He rolled over on top of her, gently pushing her hair out of her eyes, and leaned in to kiss her.

The bedroom door flew open.

"Mommy, I need a drink of water."

Sighing, she pushed her husband away from her and got up to get the water and retuck the child. After instructing her child to Stay. In. Bed., she returned to her room, remembering to lock the door.

"Now, where were we?" She sat beside him, kissing the back of his neck.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

"Ignore it.", he whispered.

Knock. Knock...knockknockknockknock.

"Mooooommmmy!" Child number two was not going to give up.

"What?!" His father threw open the door, impatience clear in his expression and tone. Didn't seem to phase the seven year old.

"I'm scared." Her little voice trembled.

He looked back at his wife. She raised her eyebrows at him as if to say, what can you say to that? and motioned to him that it was his turn this time.

He took his daughter's hand and headed back to the girls' room, intent on finding her favorite stuffed unicorn and preventer of all bad dreams. His wife shut the door behind them and went to her dresser, pulling out her favorite satin nightie. The night was still young after all.

"Mom?"

Their oldest child stood in the doorway, looking as though he were holding back tears. She shoved the nightgown back in the drawer and sat down on the edge of the bed. He sat next to her and the tears began to fall.

"Spencer's parents are getting a divorce. They said they don't like each other anymore. His mom is moving to live with some other guy she likes better and Spencer has to go with her." The tears were real now. This was more than a nine year old could handle.

"Oh, honey. I'm so sorry." She pulled him in close for a hug.

"You won't..." he looked up at her, fear contorting his face, "I mean you...and dad..."

"Your dad and I like each other just fine, honey, you don't have to worry about that." She looked up as her husband came back in the room and shook her head slightly at him when he seemed likely to order their son back to bed. He gave her a frustrated look but sat down with them and added his reassurances once he'd heard the whole story.

Finally, their son seemed confident enough to head back to bed and his father went with him to settle him in for the night. He returned to find her tucked into their bed, clad in a flannel nightgown, watching TV. The child's concern over their love apparently squashed the expression of it. Sigh. So much for romance.

Or so he thought.

At the end of the day, at the end of responsibilities and work and children, he loved his wife. His assurances had been real and flannel nightgown or no, she was beautiful. And finally, after checking that the children were actually asleep and the door was really locked, she was fully and completely his. And everything was right in their world.
