Yesterday's Classics E-Book Collection

You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be—
I had a mother who read to me.

                            —Strickland Gillilan

This quote graces the top of the Yesterday's Classics site and it reflects my homeschooling style well.  I pray that someday my children will understand how important reading together is to their education, as well as to our relationship.  My favorite thing to do is to gather everyone together and curl up with a book, walking together through the adventure as I read.

I enjoy some of the more modern books, even the latest novel on the bestseller lists, but know there is a place for some of the classics and vintage books as well.  Many of the homeschool curriculum, especially those of a Classical or Charlotte Mason flavor, utilize these books within their studies.  Yesterday's Classics has brought two hundred and twenty-five of these together in an e-book collection, making it easy to keep these readily available for our schooling.

Many of these books are now in the public domain and available on the Internet.  What Yesterday's Classics has done is combine them for you in a nice collection and listed them according to age and grade level, genre, author, and title.  The editions are easy to read and include illustrations where applicable.  You won't find any of the annoying extra characters or misplaced page breaks as is sometimes common in public domain e-books.  I'm not sure this would be worth the cost for me personally but do believe that if you are working with a curriculum that relies heavily on these books, it would be an asset.  Yesterday's Classics website even provides a listing of the books used in Ambelside, Living Books Curriculum, and Pageant of History

I'm not going to list all two hundred and twenty-five books here, you can click the link below and read through them for yourself, but they include such well known titles as The Famous Men series, The Odyssey and The Iliad for Boys and Girls, Guerber's The Story of the Greeks and The Story of Rome, The Fairy Book and The Blue Fairy Book, Just So Stories, Tales From Shakespeare, Otto of the Silver Hand, Men of Iron, the Streams of History series, This Country of Ours, and more.  There were so many great options, I ended up purchasing another Nook for the younger kids to share (Mine is off limits, I admit!).  You can read the books directly from the computer, but I prefer an e-reader myself.

For more information, to view the complete book list, and to order, please click the box below.  There's also a sample e-book available for download.  The $99.95 price is listed as available until May 31, 2011.  Please check the website for details after that date.

I absolutely LOVED reading to my children when they were smaller. They'd pile the books beside me and they would be so excited. Now that they are older, they enjoy reading! :)

This is an interesting resource, Lori. Thanks for reviewing!

I LOVE e-books (but still have to keep lots of "real books," too!) and like the idea of copies that don't have the extra characters and junk that you mentioned. I develop literature study guides for classic literature, and am forever loading public domain classic e-books onto my Kindle, only to get irritated while reading them because of the messy formatting.

Thanks for a really informative review!

A.Marie- I still read aloud to my older kids! Love reading in this family. In fact, I am about to curl up with a book myself.

Sabrina- I can read past the messy formatting but it is a lot nicer when it looks pretty! I'll have to pop over and check out your lit guides, sounds cool. :-)
