Science Weekly wants to "put a little science in your week". They desire to do this through a yearly subscription to their "newspaper". These consist of four sheets of information, in a one fold format. There are six levels available, ranging from grades K-6. This is not a weekly subscription, you will receive fifteen issues a year at whichever level you choose. Teaching Notes are provided and are about the same length as the "newspaper" itself.We received a sampling of each level for one topic. Our topic was "The Flu". This was rather appropriate, as we all had the flu when our envelope arrived! Once we'd recovered enough to focus, we pulled the issues out to investigate influenza.
Each issue contains information about the topic, as well as vocabulary, math, writing, and a weekly lab. Some also include a challenge and/or puzzle, all at the appropriate grade level. These are full color papers and are bright and appealing. The information is easy to understand and the labs are actually doable. In fact, the labs were the best part for me. They add a hands on aspect without being overly complicated.
My take away impression of this is rather ambivalent. I'm not a fan of flu shots (these are encouraged in the sample I received) but the issues were somewhat interesting and the idea of digging into a different science topic every few weeks throughout the year is enticing. There is nothing I don't like about this product but I'm not finding myself a fan either and I can't really put my finger on why.
