KinderBach is simply piano and music theory designed for preschoolers! Using the piano or keyboard as a basis, young children ages 2-7 learn how to play and read music. Karri Gregor, the creator of KinderBach, believes that children do not have to know how to read in order to play the piano. She uses animated characters to represent the notes on the piano and the videos are done in a style that reminds me of Blue's Clues. Karri is the one bit of reality as she teaches the kids and is surrounded by cartoon rooms and characters.
We had the opportunity to review this a few years ago, when my youngest was only six. You can read what we thought of this program in my first review, Kinderbach. A favorite of many on the TOS Crew, this product came up for review again this year. My youngest is now nine, and the target age is three to seven, so I came up with an alternate idea, ran it by my Crew "boss", and decided to share the love with a homeschooling friend who doesn't happen to blog or review. Remember the four year old I mentioned in the original review? What? You didn't go read the original review yet? Pop over there first and this will all make much more sense. Go ahead, I'll wait...
The four year old, Sami, is now six and she was more than willing to try Kinderbach again, this time on her own! After spending a few weeks with the program, they sent me their honest opinions. Her mom shares the parental point of view below, followed by Sami in her own words. Hannah (Mom): We really enjoyed this program. It was simple enough that my six year old daughter could log on and go from lesson to lesson independently, which was great for both of us. I liked how you could progress rapidly if there were concepts she got and she could repeat lessons that she didn't absorb fully. My favorite feature was the print outs that came with lessons. I loved that it reinforced what she learned that day, but also provided an opportunity to take work with us if we were not near a computer. I would just print them out and save them rather than having her do them that same day. The lessons were engaging and she always looked forward to doing them, almost like it was a reward, not a lesson. This is something I would love to continue given the opportunity.
Sami: I liked all the characters. They were my friends and they liked music too. I liked that I had color pages to do and not just computer stuff. I liked to sing along with the songs and all the stories they showed me that helped me get to know my piano better. I got to play my piano right away because I could learn it really fast. That made it fun!
Kinderbach is available as an online membership for $95.88 a year or $19.99 a month. You can try it for FREE and see if this is something that your family would love! There are also DVDs of the lessons available (price varies depending on package purchased). Two years later, I'm still impressed with the program. I find it to be a fun and easy introduction to piano and music theory for preschoolers and Kindergartners.
*Disclosure: I received a free trial subscription of this program (which Hannah and Sami enjoyed on my behalf) for review purposes. To see what others thought of this program and more, please see the TOS Crew site.*
