Buyer Beware Gives Way to Fluffy, Funky, Fun

If you've been reading my blog for a bit, you already know that my oldest daughter is getting married in July and wedding planning is in full swing.  She and her fiancee are paying for much of the wedding themselves (we are helping out with the reception costs but times are tight).  We managed to find junior bridesmaid dresses on clearance at Sears and were hoping to purchase bridesmaid dresses as inexpensively as possible.  Me being the reviewer and Internet junkie that I am, I researched different online options.  There were so many positive reviews for Lightinthebox.com that I put aside my wariness at purchasing overseas (they are in China) and we ordered our dresses.

Big. Mistake.

The first dress arrived at the home of one of the bridesmaids and she called my daughter, concerned because she thought the dress looked like a costume, the color was closer to orange than the red we wanted, and it didn't fit.  A few days later my dress arrived.  The color was definitely more of an orange, the elegant dress from the photo looked quite tacky and cheap up close and personal, and it didn't fit.  I had decided to pay an extra $30 to have them make it to my measurements and yet it was too large and the seam of the jacket was halfway down my arm.  When the third dress arrived, it too was declared completely unusable.  This one did not fit either and, like the others, looked homemade rather than handmade.  The dresses were a disaster and the restocking fees were almost the price of the dresses.  We were out a total of $350 and there was nothing we could do but learn our lesson.  And share it with you.  I'm not sure where all the positive reviews for Lightinthebox.com are coming from, but I hope someone stumbles upon mine and takes this buyer beware.  Steer clear and avoid heartache.

Today was Dress Shopping: Take Two.  We decided to stay local (I know, I know, should have done that to begin with!) and we headed to the closest David's Bridal.  As the Matron of Honor and Mother of the Bride, I was concerned that I'd have a hard time finding something that matched the wedding party and yet didn't look like it belonged on a twenty year old.  I ended up with a prom dress "for the curvy girl" so I'm not sure I fulfilled that goal but it looked oh so funky and fun on the hanger and I just had to try it on.  I never thought my daughter would like it but she loved it and didn't even let me try on the other three dresses I had brought into the fitting room.  It's knee length, layers of black lace, with a satin waist band.  It is so fluffy and fun, I couldn't help trying on my best Despicable Me voice and hollering, "It's so FLUFFY!".

More than once. In the middle of David's Bridal.

The two bridesmaids found dresses that matched both the junior bridesmaids and mine.  As mine came only in black, my daughter decided to have me wear black and the rest of the wedding party would wear the red she originally wanted.  Only one problem, when we went to order their dresses we were told the red was a cut to order option and the dresses would not come in until after the wedding.  We stood there stunned, unsure of what to do next.  Dress Shopping: Take Two was becoming a Strike Two.

The salesgirl suggested we all wear black (the in-stock option) and the junior bridesmaids could stay in red.  We could wear red shoes and the groomsmen could wear black tuxedos with red ties and we'd all coordinate.  Excellent suggestion, but did my daughter want to add to her wedding colors on the spot?

She did, relieved to find a solution.  The dresses were purchased and the day was considered a success.  Dress Shopping: Take Two for the win.

And now I need to focus on the homeschooling convention tomorrow and bring you up to the minute reports.  Well, maybe not up to the minute.  Maybe the hour? Oh, who am I kidding, I'll be lucky to find time to post but I am hoping for lots of blog fodder and items of interest to share with you!

But first I need to stop dreaming of red shoes to match my fun and funky dress.

It's so FLUFFY!

You know, I bought my wedding gown off the rack at David's Bridal 3 days before my wedding over 13 years ago (long and not so funny story, wink). Sounds like it's all coming together and you'll all be classy.;0)

That's horrible. I guess they had their workers write those reviews! Yuck! I'm so glad you were able to come up with something.

Can't wait to see pictures!

Question #1: Where is the photo of you in said fluffy dress?

Question #2: Where, oh where, is the audio clip of your Despicalble Me voice?? :D

Anyone know how to do threaded comments in Blogger? I'd love to be able to respond individually!

Since I can't yet, I'll say thanks all, it is horrible and I think I'm saving photos for the wedding. Oh, and the whole audio clip? Hahahahaha! That would be funny, but...no. ;-)

I also had a similar nightmare story about bridesmaids dresses when planning my own wedding. That was with a different company though. To make it even more fun my three attendants lived in three different places!

Glad you were able to find a solution.
