Rhythym of Secrets by Patti Lacy: Blog Tour & NOOK Giveaway

About the book: Since 1955, Sheila Franklin, a talented musician, has perfectly performed the role of devout pastor’s wife, locking away her past as Sheba Alexander and Sylvia Allen. Her carefully constructed façade crumbles with a single phone call from a young Marine named Samuel, the illegitimate son she secretly put up for adoption. Samuel begs Sheila to use her government contacts to get his fiancé, Mali, a Thai prostitute, into America. A dangerous mixture of love and guilt spurs her to help her only child even though it devastates her husband Edward and exposes her questionable past. After a quarrel with Edward, Sheila and Samuel board a C-130 for Thailand and then search Bangkok’s steamy streets for a Madonna-faced prostitute. The two whisk Mali from a brothel but are seized by a warlord who considers Mali his “number one girl.” In a teak “ghost house,” Sheila discovers God’s grace and gains the freedom she needs to find her own identity—Sheila, Sylvia, and Sheba. A framed story, this novel has roots in the bohemian 1940s New Orleans French Quarter and spans three decades, including the turbulent Vietnam era.

My Thoughts:  I tend to follow cycles in my reading, where I prefer one genre over another.  Historical fiction is not high on my interest list right now but every once in awhile a book comes along that peaks my interest.  Perhaps it was that the main character is a pastor's wife, like me.  Perhaps it was the music hinted at as a central theme.  Whatever the reason, I decided that yes, Rhythm of Secrets by Patti Lacy was a book I would like to read an review.

As I read, I questioned that decision.  The beginning felt rather stilted and here we go again with the pastor character being a jerk.  My husband is a pastor and although he can sometimes be a jerk just like any member of the human race, he is of good character.  But by the time I got to the end of the book, my fears were relieved and I quite enjoyed the story.

Once the author brought us back in time to relive Sheila's past in New Orleans, the story really came alive.  I was drawn into that storyline and lived that experience along with the character.  That's what I want from a book and Patti Lacy provided it well.  I protested out loud whenever she would swap back to the present time (for the characters) storyline, as I lived and breathed the past.

If you're a fan of historical fiction, I would definitely recommend this book.  Even if you're not, you may like it as well. I did!  Check out the Blog Tour for more reviews.

Lori, thanks for the input! You're not the only reader who struggles with the framed story! My 2011 fall Bethany House book, Reclaiming Lily (also has a pastor's wife character:)) is much more single time frame.

Blessings, dear one. Thanks for supporting your husband AND his ministry.
Patti

Lori --You wrote a perfectly understandable review... being sick and writing isn't fun sometimes, is it?

Not being a pastor's wife, I didn't react quite the same way to the portrayal of the pastor in this story... but kind of. I don't think I said it in my review, but I was initially quite a bit annoyed with the author. All these other characters were so well fleshed out and we were seeing their side, and hubby was SO flat and cold and uncaring... and just a jerk.

I was very happy when we began to get inside his head too.

I did have strep throat when writing this review, so it was not as clear as I would have liked. All in all, I did enjoy the book!
