The Write Foundation

Photobucket

PhotobucketWriting is not something I tend to teach formally.  My personally philosophy has been that if you read great books aloud, teach your children to consume good books on their own, and express your creativity in writing as often as possible, the mechanics will be learned naturally.  This has proven to be the case with my first few children, but my thirteen year old does not enjoy writing and would definitely refer to himself as a reluctant reader.  When I had the chance to review The Write Foundation: Level 1 Sentence to Paragraph Writing, I was hoping perhaps an opposite method to my own would be helpful for him.

The curriculum is divided into two semesters, consisting of fifteen lessons each.  I received Lessons 1-15 and was immediately disappointed by the lack of quality in the materials themselves.  The instruction manual is spiral bound with a laminate cover, containing black and white copies that seem to be printed on the "Quick Print" setting.  The student worksheets are the same, but three hole punched and loose in the package. Unfortunately, a few of the front pages were ripped.  As these were not pages necessary to use the program, I did not exchange them, but I did hear from others that their customer service was good and needed exchanges were made quickly.

The author suggests you spend a couple of hours learning the material and the set up.  I attempted to do this but found her instructions confusing and not suited to my learning or teaching style (I'm not assigning homework or dividing everything with little tabs, it's just not me), so I decided I would tweak it as I do for most products.  We jumped into the program and began with writing complete sentences and highlighting subjects and verbs.  The curriculum then moved into alliteration, which I adore, and taught the student to use a thesaurus to describe an animal.  The use of silly sentences was a great way to inject some humor into the program, but unfortunately the program as a whole was still not a good fit for my son or our family.  The philosophy of working from the mechanics to the creativity is stifling for me as a teacher and doesn't work well for my son as a student.  He is currently working through an online grammar program and this seems to teach him the needed basics, which will hopefully improve his writing.

However, I've been homeschooling long enough to know that the product that doesn't work for our family may be a perfect fit for yours.  I know that in our house, we need formal math instruction.  Other homes may need this type of structured, simplistic approach to writing.  If this describes you, you may want to check into The Write Foundation Level 1.  Here's the scoop from their website:
